FRONT OF THE LINE
'The best part of camping out is meeting people'

July 26, 2008

When he was a kid, Geoffrey McDonald lived along a train track. And each night at 11:04, the train would blow past his window for 15 minutes.

Geoffrey McDonald of Poway managed to get some rest, secure in the knowledge that he was one of the first in line for yesterday's Comic-Con.
So, McDonald had absolutely no trouble falling asleep outside the relatively quiet Convention Center. He lined up at 10 p.m. Thursday to be among the first to get into Hall H Friday.

It's not easy to get a good seat in Hall H, where the upcoming “Watchmen” and “The Spirit” movies would be previewed.

“There's so many cool things going on,” he said. “I'm just going to stay in there all day.”

Thanks to his ability to sleep through those trains, the 18-year-old from Poway was able to take a power nap from 4 to 7:30 a.m. He also had a 12-pack of Mountain Dew at his feet to keep him energized.

“The best part of camping out is meeting people,” he said. “I've been coming to Comic-Con for five years, but this is my first time actually staying the night.”

Even though the recent high school graduate loves video games, he'll be waiting until Sunday to explore the exhibit hall for goodies. That's when he'll scope out anything having to do with the sci-fi game “Xenosaga.”

“That game introduced me to Carl Jung and Nietzsche,” he said. “It turned my life around.”

McDonald is already making plans for next year's Con, where he'll dress up as the redheaded Junior from “Xenosaga.” It's a costume that requires a leather jacket and leather chaps.

Those are accessories that will no doubt complicate standing in the front of the line, but McDonald will worry about that in 2009. And anyway, it's nowhere near as bad as that train.
