1909: Louis Bleriot, a 37-year-old French inventor, aircraft designer and self-trained pilot, becomes the first man to fly across the English Channel in an aircraft.

1978: Louise Brown, the first “test tube baby,” is born in England. She was conceived through the technique of in vitro fertilization.
