STAT OF THE DAY

Tiger Woods' rank in the tournament for hitting fairways (13-of-28). He is tied for eighth in greens in regulation (29-of-36).

FAMILY AFFAIR

Woods made the trip here with his wife, Elin, and infant daughter, Sam, in tow. Surprisingly, though, the small entourage excluded a nanny for the baby. Woods said neither he nor his wife – a former nanny to the family of golfer Jesper Parnevik – was raised by nannies, and they were determined to raise their daughter on their own, at least early on. “More than anything, it was teamwork between Elin and myself,” Woods said. “Some nights I take the all-nighter or she'll take the all-nighter, and that's how we did it. ... Sometimes it's 2 a.m. and you stay up for 26, 28 hours. But when you love something that much, you do that. It's just normal.”

CALCAVECCHIA BLOWS UP

Mark Calcavecchia is known as one of golf's biggest hotheads, and he had one classic meltdown on his way to missing the cut. At 3-over going into the 18th hole of the North Course, the frustration showed on his face as he lined up a long, uphill putt for birdie. When the putt rolled about a foot past the hole, he strode to his ball, but instead of tapping it in, he whacked it down to where he had first putted. He tried the putt again, and missed again. When he got to the ball this time, he took an angry swipe at it and missed. Then he finally tapped it in. The total: five putts, a quadruple-bogey 9, and one hacked-off golfer as he stormed up the steps to sign for his 77.

PADDY'S SHINGLES

It was a disappointment to fans and tournament organizers when British Open champion Padraig Harrington decided a couple of weeks ago to pull out of his first appearance in the Buick. As it turns out, it was a fortunate move for everybody, including Harrington's fellow golfers. The Irish press reported yesterday that Harrington, upon returning from the European Tour event in Abu Dhabi, has been diagnosed with shingles, a contagious disease, caused by the same virus as chicken pox. Doctors ordered Harrington to be isolated in his home outside Dublin until the condition clears.
