THE GAME CENTER | HOW THEY WON (5-4), COMPILED BY BILL CENTER
in the second ...
Barry Bonds led off with a walk and Bengie Molina singled. With one out, Rich Aurilia's single to center loaded the bases. Kevin Frandsen hit a fly to medium-deep right. Bonds scored and Molina tagged up and moved to third. Pitcher Barry Zito, after feebly fouling off three two-strike offerings from Chris Young, dropped a single into left.
in the fourth ...
Adrian Gonzalez singled to open the inning. With one out, Kevin Kouzmanoff homered to right-center to tie the score.
in the seventh ...
With two out, Giants speedster Eugenio Velez hit a rocket to right and made it to third with a headfirst slide. Young's first pitch to Randy Winn bounced in front of the plate and just far enough away from catcher Josh Bard to allow Velez to score the go-ahead run.
in the ninth...
Scott Hairston greeted Giants reliever Brad Hennessey with a home run to left, his fourth homer in 28 at-bats as a Padre. Bard walked and Brady Clark ran for him. Craig Stansberry sacrificed Clark to second. Left-hander Steve Kline replaced Hennessey and survived a Brian Giles flyout to the base of the scoreboard in right. Geoff Blum doubled inside the bag at third, driving in Clark to tie the score. Mike Cameron flied to Rajai Davis at the fence in right-center.
THE TURNING POINT
in the tenth ...
With one out, Khalil Greene drove the first pitch from Giants reliever Dan Giese 406 feet into the seats in left for a walk-off homer.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
On Aug. 9, Scott Hairston felt a tug in his left rib cage just after he rounded first base in St. Louis.
Exactly a month later, he came off the disabled list. It was two more days before Hairston could test his injury in the outfield.
So don't talk to Hairston about the “mild” right oblique strain that has kept Milton Bradley out of the lineup since Sept. 7.
“I have talked to some guys who said they still felt oblique strains the next season,” said Hairston. “I'm still not 100 percent. Two weeks after I did it, I took a batting practice swing in the cage and felt it to where I had to back off what I was doing.
“People don't realize how tough an injury an oblique strain can be. No matter what direction you go, you feel it. It is serious business.
“Milton is going to be out there when Milton is ready to be out there. It's not an injury where you can say, 'I'll be back in a week or two.' ”
When Bradley was injured, the Padres hoped he would return in time to face the Dodgers. Now they're hoping for early next week.

KEY FACTORS
Player of the Game: Khalil Greene. He kept the Padres 1½ games up in the wild-card race with a walk-off homer in the 10th.
Offense: Kevin Kouzmanoff can't be faulted for the Padres' skid. His two-run homer last night gave him 17 home runs for the season, one shy of the Padres rookie record, set by Benito Santiago in 1986.
Pitching: Chris Young issued one walk and it produced a run, and he came within one strike of a two-run, seven-inning performance. It was a big improvement over his previous five outings.
Speed: In Los Angeles, the difference in the last two games of that series was the stolen bases of Rafael Furcal and Juan Pierre. Last night, Giants rookie Eugenio Velez raced around the bases and turned two headfirst slides into a run.
WHO'S HOT
Kevin Kouzmanoff: Has hit safely in 18 of his past 21 games, going 31-for-76 (.408) with four homers and 12 RBI.
Khalil Greene: Third homer in his past seven games wins it. He has hit safely in 20 of the past 24 games (32-for-94) with 10 doubles, three homers and 15 RBI.
Doug Brocail: Reliever has allowed three runs on 12 hits over 25 innings covering 22 appearances since July 26. During the streak, Brocail has issued three walks and struck out 13.
WHO'S NOT
Brian Giles: He's 0-for-13 in past three games, 2-for-22 in past five and is just short on a home run try in the ninth.
TEAM TRENDS
Come-from-behind win keeps the Padres 1½ games ahead in the wild-card race.
