AROUND THE REGION: CITY EDITION
FBI investigating teacher at Farb

July 4, 2006

The San Diego Unified School District has placed a teacher at Farb Middle School in Tierrasanta on paid administrative leave, pending an investigation by the FBI.

The leave took effect Friday when the district became aware of the investigation, a spokeswoman said.

The name of the teacher in question has not been released. The district referred all questions to the FBI.

Jan Caldwell, an FBI spokeswoman, yesterday refused to comment on the case. A search warrant executed by her agency is sealed.

According to a letter Farb sent yesterday to parents, the teacher's home was searched by the FBI, but the teacher was not arrested.

The letter, which did not discuss the reason for the investigation, in part read, “We want to emphasize that, to our knowledge at this time, the FBI investigation has nothing to do with our school or our children.”

Couple rescued from mobile home fire

VISTA – A neighbor rescued a couple from their burning mobile home yesterday and then extinguished the blaze with a garden hose, fire officials said.

The fire started on the patio of the home on Melrose Drive near Olive Avenue about 1:30 p.m. The blaze was out when firefighters arrived.

“We probably would have had a really big fire in there if he hadn't intervened,” said fire inspector Adrian Abel.

Garbage truck crashes into house

VISTA – A garbage truck ran off an embankment and plowed into a house on Carioca Place yesterday, fire officials said.

The family was on vacation, and a house-sitter was in the backyard with a child when the truck crashed through the living room at 10:30 a.m., said Vista fire battalion chief Jeff Berg.

The driver of the Edco truck was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, Berg said. The crash may have been caused by mechanical failure, he said.

The Armed Services YMCA will host a concert tonight in Santee to raise money for the planned combat casualty care center at the San Diego Naval Medical Center.

Ben Owens, a 17-year-old Christian guitarist who models himself after country great Chet Atkins, will perform from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Santee Trolley Square Amphitheater in the Target shopping center.

The concert is free, but donations will be accepted.

The center will provide services such as plastic surgery, advanced physical therapy and fitting for high-tech prostheses. It will open late this summer.

Condo plans worry El Cortez residents

A downtown committee will preview plans for a controversial condominium complex next to the historic El Cortez on Thursday.

The meeting of the Centre City Advisory Committee pre-design subcommittee will be held at 5:15 p.m. in the large conference room on the 11th floor of the NBC building at 225 Broadway. No decisions will be made at the meeting, although committee members may make suggestions to the developer. The public will have a chance to speak.

The seven-or eight-story building, proposed by the J. Peter Block Companies at 777 Beech St., includes 84 condominiums, 8,500 square feet of retail and 139 parking spaces along the south side of Beech Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues directly north of El Cortez.

Some residents of El Cortez have said they are concerned the building will obstruct views and harm the historical integrity of the site.
