    The federal judge who ordered the removal of the Mount Soledad cross from city parkland yesterday rejected a bid by a private group to join the litigation, saying its efforts to save the cross come “much too late.”

    A 48-year-old Florida man was convicted yesterday of murdering a San Diego woman in her downtown apartment 18 years ago. Mark Francis Elder of Orange City was found guilty of first-degree murder in the June 11, 1988, fatal stabbing of 27-year-old Janet Moore.
