Conjoined twin girls face lengthy surgery

June 14, 2006

LOS ANGELES – Doctors yesterday prepared for a marathon surgery to separate 10-month-old twin girls joined from the chest to the pelvis.

The operation, scheduled to begin early today, was expected to last 24 hours. It was considered more complex than other separation surgeries involving conjoined twins because so many organ systems were involved.

Identical twins Regina and Renata Salinas Fierros were born facing each other with separate heads, necks, shoulders, arms, hearts and lungs. But they were fused from the midsection down, sharing part of the small intestine and the entire large intestine.

Warrant is issued in Reno shootings

RENO, Nev. – Police issued a murder warrant yesterday for a pawn shop owner in the slaying of his estranged wife, and declared him a suspect in the sniper attack that wounded a judge who was handling the couple's pending divorce.

A nationwide search was under way for Darren Roy Mack, 45, who had access to multiple weapons and might be armed, Reno Deputy Police Chief Jim Johns said.

Family Court Judge Chuck Weller was shot in the chest Monday when a sniper fired through the window of his third floor office in the Washoe County courthouse complex. Later, Charla Mack, 39, was found dead in the garage of her townhome. Weller's condition was upgraded from serious to good yesterday, police said.

Gang member gets life, not death row

SAN FRANCISCO – The state Supreme Court commuted the death sentence to life in prison without parole for a Los Angeles gang member convicted of murdering two rivals.

The justices upheld the conviction of Jose Gonzalez, but said Monday there were errors during the trial's penalty phase, when jurors decide whether to issue a life or death sentence.
