AL REPORT
Jays call up Alfonzo to play second base

UNION-TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICES

May 30, 2006

The Blue Jays called up veteran infielder Edgardo Alfonzo from Double-A New Hampshire yesterday and put utility infielder John McDonald on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin.

Alfonzo, who signed a minor league contract with Toronto on Thursday, was released by the Los Angeles Angels earlier this month after batting .100.

Alfonzo, 32, will play second base while Aaron Hill shifts to shortstop.

McDonald hurt his groin Saturday while running to first base.

The Jays also transferred A.J. Burnett to the 60-day DL, meaning he won't pitch until June 21 at the earliest.

Around the league

TWINS: It doesn't appear that outfielder Shannon Stewart, out with an injured left foot, will come off the DL when he is eligible on Sunday.

ANGELS: Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon, recovering from inflammation in his right shoulder, could be activated after two rehab starts, meaning he might return the following weekend against Seattle.
