ROBERT BROWN / Billabong XXL.com Brad Gerlach of San Diego rides a 68-foot wave off Todos Santos Island near Ensenada, a ride that has earned him the 2006 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Award. Gerlach, 40, caught the wave Dec. 21. The contest – open to any surfer who could ride the biggest documented wave – was open from April 1, 2005, to March 31 of this year. Gerlach received a check for $68,000, or $1,000 for every foot of the wave.
