Police: Couple's deaths murder-suicide

STAFF WRITER

April 13, 2006

PARK WEST – Grace Ediza-Kazanjian held down two jobs, working at a Rite Aid pharmacy and a movie theater.

On Saturday morning, when a Rite Aid co-worker went to Ediza-Kazanjian's home on Sixth Avenue near Balboa Park to take her to work, she was told by the woman's husband that Grace was sick and wouldn't be going to work that day.

Tuesday afternoon, the couple were found dead inside their duplex. Investigators are calling their deaths a murder-suicide, but know little else about what happened in the days before the discovery.

The county Medical Examiner's Office identified the husband as Haig Kazanjian. Both were 48.

Authorities believe Kazanjian killed his wife and then himself. Sal Rodriguez, an investigator with the Medical Examiner's Office, said both bodies are being examined and that the cause of death hasn't been established.

San Diego police homicide Lt. Mike Hurley said that the time of death is still unknown and that detectives are trying to determine the motive.

“The woman's mother spoke with her daughter daily and had not heard from her since last Friday,” Hurley said. “She said her daughter had not shown up for work on Saturday.”

Officers found the victims' bodies at their home about 5 p.m. Tuesday after the woman's mother called police.

There appeared to be trauma injuries to the woman, who was found in bed, partly covered with blankets. The man was found facedown in the living room.

“When the man's body was turned over, there also were obvious signs of self-inflicted wounds,” Hurley said.
