San Marcos spotlight

Calligraphy artist and teacher Sylver Kinsella will present a workshop and demonstration of calligraphy for teens at 4 p.m. Thursday at the San Marcos branch library, 2 Civic Center Drive.

Teens will have the chance to learn and practice the basics of calligraphy.

Admission is free, but advance registration is required.

The presentation is part of the summer reading program at the library.

One-act plays: The last performance of "Laundry and Bourbon" and "Lone Star" will be at 2 p.m. today at Palomar College's Howard Brubeck Theater, 1140 W. Mission Road. Tickets: $8 to $12. Box office: (760) 744-1150, ext. 2453.

Summer concerts: San Marcos Community Services will present The Bayou Brothers at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wood House, 1148 Rock Springs Road. The Fabulous Woodies will perform Aug. 27.

Cabaret audition: Actors, musicians, dancers and other entertainers are invited to try out for the city's annual talent show. Auditions will begin at 10 a.m. July 30 at San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive. The show will be Aug. 13. Information: (760) 744-9000, ext. 3504.

Free hike: San Marcos Community Services will offer a hike from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 6 at Jack's Pond Park, 986 La Moree Road. Michael Becker of Herpetological Rescue Services will discuss conservation of native and non-native reptiles. Free. Information: (760) 744-9000, ext. 3508.

Junior lifeguard training: Classes will be from 11 a.m. to noon Aug. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at Woodland Park Pool. Students will learn CPR, first aid, water safety and stroke refinement. Cost: $40 residents; $50 others. Information: (760) 746-2028.

Twin Oaks Toastmasters: The group meets at 12:05 p.m. Wednesdays at University of Phoenix, 277 Rancheros Drive, Room 207, San Marcos. Members work on improving speaking, meeting leadership and presentation skills. Information: (760) 505-5038 or www.twinoakstoastmasters.org.
