Probable starters: LHP Brad Halsey (5-7, 4.26 ERA) vs. RHP Tim Stauffer (3-4, 4.55 ERA)

The skinny: A match of rookies. Stauffer, 23, will be making his 12th start since being promoted from Triple-A Portland on May 9. Halsey, 24, who came to Arizona with Javier Vazquez in the trade last winter that sent Randy Johnson to the Yankees, is making his 18th start and his third against the Padres. He is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his first two outings against the Padres. Stauffer is riding a two-game winning streak and has allowed five earned runs over his past 12 213 innings (3.55 ERA). The Padres are 6-5 when Stauffer starts.
