July 17, 1884

Leach's Opera House opened as the city's first theater on D Street (now Broadway).

July 18, 1984

James Oliver Huberty opened fire in a McDonald's in San Ysidro, killing 21 people and injuring 19 before he was killed by a police sharpshooter.

July 19, 1982

Tony Gwynn made his major league debut in San Diego. In the eighth inning, Gwynn doubled off Sid Monge for hit No. 1. He singled in the ninth to end his first game 2-for-4.

July 20, 1917

The Signal Corps Aviation School at North Island was named Rockwell Field in honor of 2nd Lt. Lewis C. Rockwell, who was killed in a crash in College Park, Md., in 1912.

July 21, 1935

Mexico banned gambling, and the famous Agua Caliente casino closed.

July 21, 1998

The $20 million Coors Amphitheatre in Chula Vista opened with a concert by Chicago and Hall & Oates.

July 22, 1898

The Reading Room, La Jolla's first library, opened at Girard Avenue and Wall Street.

July 23, 1987

A pair of giant pandas named Basi and Yuan Yuan arrived at the San Diego Zoo on loan from China.
