CRIME WATCH: NORTH EDITION
Teen is held in attempted carjacking

July 17, 2005

CARLSBAD – A 16-year-old youth was arrested Friday evening after he attempted to take a woman's car by threatening her with a pocket knife outside a video rental store.

Carlsbad police said the incident occurred at 6:24 p.m. in the parking lot of a Blockbuster store at the intersection of Carlsbad Village Drive and Roosevelt Street.

The suspect brandished a pocket knife and tried to force a 39-year-old woman out of her car. The woman struggled with the suspect and sustained a minor cut on her hand. When the victim screamed, the suspect fled along with a companion.

About 20 minutes later, the suspect and his companion were found hiding inside the bathroom of a Denny's restaurant at 1048 Carlsbad Village Drive. Patrons had reported the suspicious behavior of the two men.

The suspect's companion was released after investigation determined that he was not involved in the carjacking attempt. The suspect was booked into Juvenile Hall on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted carjacking.
