Chargers figuring out life after Merriman

Michael Jordan is missing.

Scottie Pippen is playing his hardest, yet finding himself looking around wondering what the heck is not quite right.

"One of the big reasons I decided to make sure I re-signed here is because I knew I had Shawne Merriman on my team," Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips said this week. "I knew it's not always on me. To me, it was like Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan."

Phillips is not suggesting he and Merriman are at the level of the Chicago Bulls duo that won six NBA titles together and none apart. Phillips just saw Jordan-Pippen thusly: a supporting player who was one of the best players in the league but didn't get all the attention and was certainly made better by his megastar teammate.
